If one more person tells me they eat 'low-fat' like it is a badge of honour I am going to EXPLODE!
We NEED fat for our health. It is critical for so many body functions... Think brain, nervous system, hormones, immunity, sugar regulation, digestion, hair, skin, nails, sleep.... The list is endless. It is not debatable anymore. And no, of course I don't mean hot chips, donuts and fried chicken... I mean coconut, coconut oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, oily fish and all the 'good' fats. You CAN NOT express your full health potential without these FATS. They are a requirement. Period.
The brainwashing of the 1980s is outdated. I don't care what the heart foundation or the diabetes associations are saying, high carb and low fat diets will KILL YOU.
FAT is not a dirty word! If you are going to enhance your health using coconut oil, you need to come to terms with the fact that eating lots of fat will not, contrary to popular belief, make you fat. Fat is critical for human life, but we have become so completely scared of it over the years. For many people it is really hard to let go of those deeply ingrained mistruths that tell us fat is bad.
Despite the low fat craze that society forces upon us, fat is a normal and essential nutrient. Fat is the structural component that makes up our brain and nervous system and most of our endocrine (hormone) system. Together these two systems are primarily responsible for regulating the entire body. Fat is required to make and absorb vitamins from our food, is used for energy and is stored for release when more energy is needed, and is also a major component of the cell wall in all of our 100 trillion or so cells.
It is essential to consume a consistent daily supply of fat to fuel a healthy body. But don’t let the simplicity of that statement mislead you. It is not an endorsement to eat any animal fat, deep fried foods, biscuits, cakes, chocolates or treats… far from it, the quality and source of fat is critically important. Eating the wrong fats causes inflammation in the body and is associated with nearly all lifestyle related diseases: heart disease, type II diabetes, obesity, even cancer.
Why are we told fat is bad? Misinformation. The way the world saw fats changed like never before in the 1950s when the late American academic Ancel Keys PhD proposed the theory that supposedly ‘proved’ saturated fats cause heart disease and raise cholesterol levels. Although Ancel changed his position over the next few years and made a number of inconsistent and contradictory statements, the damage was done and this led to widespread fear of saturated fats and cholesterol. By the 1960s the promotion of the low-fat diet had begun with deadly consequences to our health. This mistruth and avoidance of all saturated fats built acceptance of products like margarine, vegetable oils and began the rise of Trans fats (see below) in our food supply.
It is only in recent years that a growing number of health authorities and scientists realise that Trans fats are the real culprits in causing heart disease, and that specific types of saturated fats are actually highly beneficial. Unfortunately, despite having access to more and more updated information, many of today’s doctors, nutritionists and even scientists and government bodies cling tightly to the incomplete and faulty theories of half a century ago. This simply doesn’t make sense to the logical mind does it?? Doesn’t our government want us to be healthy? Isn’t healthcare costing us billions of dollars? Aren’t we getting sicker and sicker?
Yes. And I ask myself these questions every day. In reality, money talks, and pharmaceuticals sell… just saying….
So if you want loads of energy, stable hormones, a healthy heart, a reliable brain, clear skin, a fast metabolism and a healthy looking and feeling body - eat more FAT! And eat more coconut oil!
But if you want to be an unhealthy, moody nightmare... keep up your low fat diet..
That's it, rant over!
